Beautiful drive up from Silverton and back through Lake City. I didn’t realize how close to off-roading this trip was going to be. Definitely need a 4-wheel drive vehicle with high ground clearance. It took about an hour and a half going up and an hour and a quarter going down. Most of the drive is washed out gravel road with about five technical switchbacks over exposed rock. I’m glad I didn’t have to figure out how two vehicles would pass on this narrow single track. The sunrise views were worth the white knuckle ride in a rented full size truck.

High Clearance 4x4 Recommend if you are starting the trail on the west side of Engineer Pass on Million Dollar Highway 550 County Road 18 (CR-18) I’d say the first 5 miles are pretty intense all the way up. It took us a couple hours to 3/4 of the trail(First half about 10 miles total). The last 5 miles were pretty easy to the top. From the top of engineer pass to Lake City the roads where really easy (last half of trail 20 miles). We did a about two hours with stops for pictures. Very beautiful drive.

Beautiful view! Exciting drive! Plan on bringing food and lots of water. The trip will take longer than expected. You must have a vehicle with ground clearance and 4WD Low.

Loved the ride. Sure it’s rough. Lots of big rocks on all the trails here. Rewarding views and fresh crisp air. Alpine loop includes this segment. Stop and look for others coming uphill. I encourage all to take care of these areas so as not to lose them like so many in the East were shut down because of abusive use

Clear day drive started off 550 and up to summit, past abandoned mines and great views. Drove to Lake City for lunch. Drove Jeep Wrangler mostly in high range.

Spectacular, some of the most breathtaking views in North America. And lots of fun too but had en route! My most favorite place in the world.
