One of my favorites! It’s one of the closer trails from Denver where anyone with a 4 wheel drive vehicle can drive up to above 13,000 feet, see incredible views and stand on the continental divide. It’s a fairly simple Jeep (4x4) trail with scenery that will blow you away.
Speaking of blowing away, it’s usually pretty windy and sometimes chilly at the top. Bring a hoodie if you’re sensitive to that chill.

There are also a couple moose that I see every time I go. You have to look carefully for them, after you pass the big mill and start climbing, look very carefully out to the left - driver side, you might get to see Marylin and Sven. Yes! I named them a few years ago.

As always, please use proper off-road etiquette, (always) but especially when you’re on the shelf road, as there’s no room for 2 way traffic (I’ve seen some rollovers over the years). Give larger groups of people time at the top, by waiting safely at the bottom for them to come down. DO NOT drive on the tender tundra. Please respect the beauty and the other people that are there to do the same. Stay the trail and enjoy the beauty and energy of magical places such as this!

Was out on 9/7/23 great day, weather was perfect, windy at the top. Clear day could see Grays and Torreys. Passed a Jeep and a Tacoma on way up. Four atv’s on the way down. One more truck in the way out. Nice quiet day!!!

Great 4x4 drive, not crowded with stunning views and wild flowers at this time. Top of the pass still covered with a bit of snow as of 7/1/2023 so we had to turn around.

What an incredible off-road trail! Our friends took us up to 13,090’ from essentially the base of Georgetown, CO! The roads are a bit rocky and some areas pretty steep. Make sure your vehicle is equipped for this sort of thing! Along the way, you’ll possibly encounter wild mushrooms, deer, elk, moose, marmots and mountain goats! There are some great places to stop and have a beer and lunch and just take in the scene! Old mines litter the area! Such a beautiful trail we hope to do again! Check out the photos!

A 4x4 trail to a great Colorado destination. After a going though rutted trails with loose rocks, some erosion and creeks and obstacles up to 18-24 inches you will make to the 13k mountain top with a 360-degree view. A stock FJ with 32 in. easily make it but it was bumpy.

Awesome views from the pass for sure, and a family of mountain goats that weren’t afraid of us. GPS had me come up the lower of the parallel roads, which is not really a road in many places. The Gladiator Mojave had little problem with the ruts and cobbles. Going down we took the higher of the roads, which was 2wd most of the way. Lots of streams and alpine lakes, we’re definitely coming back.

Great place to 4x4. Especially when the aspens change. With high clearance 4x4 this trail is 5/10 in roughness

Great hike! Great views. There used to be a lot of mining in the area, and there is a lot of stuff to look at otw to the top. The hike is a bit steep. There is a little shade for the first mile but, after that it's all sun. Leave early. Can go to Gray's and Tory's peaks from here.
