I adopted a dog from here fairly recently. Leslie was rude to me the whole time (the other workers were super nice and were the ones to answer my questions). Leslie told me my dog was 10-11 months old and a vet verified that she was actually around 2 years old and had actually had puppies before. She was still on puppy food there and I was told by Leslie to even put in some wet food in with her dry food (even though she didn’t need wet food at all) The dog is super sweet…just hadn’t been worked with even though she was at the shelter for 8 months. She is timid, scared all the time, and it took a week to get her to stop shaking when we walk up to her. She is a lot better now but I won’t be going back even though I’m happy I got the dog I did.

I adopted my dog Bailey from this shelter. Bailey was always kept in a kennel before going to the shelter and doesn't trust people too well. Leslie made sure I understood and wouldn't let us take Bailey home until we were both comfortable. She knew Bailey needed time. She does what is best for the animals. Not for you. While its true that not every person there knows everything about every animal, Leslie, the one who runs the place, knows about and cares deeply for the animals. She won't let anyone come in and just take home an animal. She makes sure that these animals go home to someone who will really care about them. She makes sure you know the breed characteristics and have knowledge of how to care for them. Super great place to adopt your new family member

We've adopted two dogs from Lesley with great results since 2014. Lesley was as acknowledgable as anyone could be about all of the animals in the shelter, sometimes you just don't know a stray dog's history or their exact breed, for example one of our adopted dogs was a stray near death. We adopted a min pin so horribly emaciated at half the weight he should have been. He had every parasite imaginable, someone had dropped him off at the shelter in the middle of the night when everyone was gone so Leslie couldn't have possibly known his history, he had no chip to identify him. Lesley saved his life, she spent hundreds of dollars on Prince's vetcare, on his neglected dental care and getting Prince all of his shots plus rid of all the parasites he had. Leslie and her staff/volunteers gave Prince so much love. I wouldn't pay an ounce of attention to any negative reviews on this amazing lady or this shelter. The two 1 star reviews are just not accurate plus they're totally mean spirited. What Leslie does each day for these fur babies is selfless and often thankless, she's subjected to seeing some really sad animal abuse cases and sad situations/outcomes but she saves animal's lives everyday. AAA+++

In 2014 my family and 3adopted a cat about 4 months old. Leslie was awsome. She ask about where tiger would sleep whether she would be indoor or out. Tiger has been a family member since the first time she reached out and touched our hearts.cthank you leslie for everything that you do for the animals in you care.

Our dog Tasha (aka Tasia) came from this shelter. She was a graduate of Puppies on Parole through Missouri Correctional Center -CCC - also in Chillicothe, Mo. The shelter Administrator, Leslie shows kindness and keen instinct in her management of the volunteers and inhabitants of the shelter. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to adopt from this shelter. A true novice, I was pointed in a good direction preparing for being the caregiver for our beloved dog 🐕 Tasha.

I went in today to adopt a cat but saw this really cute guinea pig I wanted and was told no; literally told no. I don’t even know if they’re allowed to do that? I had the money and means to take care of it but wasn’t allowed to adopt it. I thought the point was to re-home the animals not to keep them. I was also interested in a cat that had been there for 5 years and was told NO? I don’t understand at all. I guess I’ll have to shop instead of adopt because they don’t want to re-home animals here. The staff doesn’t even know anything about the animals: names, how old, how long they’ve been there and have to call Leslie (who will just tell you no and send you on your way) to come answer any questions.

Very caring staff, Lesley refers to all the pets as her kids. She is such an amazing mom to all her kids and always puts there needs above all else. The best place to get a pet for you family.
