Absolutely excellent customer service. Everyone involved was professional, caring and responsive. They listened to my concerns and immediately took my beloved dog, Sassy, to surgery prep, where after hours, Dr. Mina removed a dangerous growth from her leg.
Without hesitation, they stayed late in the office that night working on her and without a doubt, saving her life.
I am eternally grateful to Dr. Mina and his wonderful staff for their quick response and caring way.

When a severely injured stray dog showed up on my property—gored on both sides by a pig—I brought her to Maika’i for emergency surgery. The first visit went as expected, and I was grateful. But after the dog reopened her stitches, I brought her back for a second procedure—and that’s when everything fell apart.

I received no communication from the clinic after dropping her off. When I called the next day, they lied and claimed they’d been trying to reach me all night, when I had received no missed calls or messages. They said she was ready for pickup, but when I arrived with my four children, I waited 45 minutes with no update or explanation before deciding to leave and come back later.

When I returned, she still wasn’t ready. I waited another hour, during which no one would speak to me, the front staff were openly rude and dismissive, and I received no information whatsoever about my dog’s condition. My baby was screaming, I had to leave again, and later I got a call asking when I could come get her—because they needed to close early for a company party.

When I finally picked her up, I was shocked. She looked visibly depressed and in pain, with stitches pulled too tight, and a chewed-up tail. I was told that the wound was hard to close, but a second opinion confirmed that there clearly wasn’t enough skin to be stitched at all—and hours after coming home, the entire wound busted wide open again, requiring me to seek emergency care elsewhere.

Despite all of this, I did not complain. I simply made a decision to never bring her back, even for drain removal. I found a better clinic, and moved on—until I was called again by someone named Portia who claimed she’d heard I had “concerns.” I politely confirmed that yes, the experience was unacceptable. She responded by immediately invalidating me, blaming me, denying all wrongdoing, and ultimately calling me rude and hanging up on me.

This clinic’s lack of communication, accountability, and compassion—not to mention the serious harm done to an already vulnerable animal—is beyond unacceptable. I will never return, and I would not trust them with any animal in my care again.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! The staff is unprofessional, disorganized, and extremely rude. We stopped coming to this clinic months ago because I felt that my dog was not getting the attention and care he needed. It felt like they were just going through the motions without actually getting to know anything about my dog and his health needs. Fast forward and it has been 5 months since I requested his medical records to be sent to his new vet and they still are not there. I didn’t get names of the workers from my past requests so they acted like I was lying about having called to request records. I went in the office myself and they would still not release his records to me (owner). The person I spoke to told me that I could not come back to pick them up until they call me (which they have said the past 5 months during other attempts). And then I mentioned that this is why we stopped coming and she sarcastically said "bye" to get me out of the office. I don't leave negative reviews, but the way this staff treats people and pets is deplorable, which is probably why they are hiring for all positions right now.

Dr Mina was extremely thorough during a new patient examination. He and his staff made recommendations for a dog arriving in Hawaii for the first time on needed vaccines and preventative medications. I appreciate their time, helpfulness and welcoming myself and whippet to their practice. Feeling blessed that you got her nails cut too- thank you!

So grateful that Dr Mina and the Maikai team would take an after hours emergency visit for our cat, Momo. He had a painful urinary block that occurred after he disappeared for two days because of the damn New Year’s fireworks explosions. It was a life-threatening blockage that they are still treating him for. But we’re so grateful and lucky to have a compassionate vet in Hilo. xoxo

Dr. Mina and his staff were wonderful with the care of my Gulliver!!! Very professional and so caring!! Dr. Mina took the time to explain everything to me. They all went out if their way to make sure that I knew what was going on every step of the way!
